The Eminem Show [Limited Edition w/ Bonus DVD] [EXPLICIT LYRICS]    Icon
by Eminem
Released a week early due to widespread piracy, the Shady one is back, splitting beat-making duties with the ubiquitous Dr. Dre on the follow-up to the wildly popular Marshall Mathers LP. "Cleaning Out My Closet," featured in Eminem's upcoming movie 8 Mile, is on this disc, as is "Without Me," a tune highly reminiscent of "The Real Slim Shady," the lead single from Mathers. Warning: Eminem has not gone PC, that's f'sure.

P Diddy & Bad Boy Records Present: We Invented the Remix [ENHANCED]    Icon
by P Diddy
You can call him Puff Crappy, Fluff Daddy, or P. Diddly, but there's one thing you can't deny--Diddy knows how to recycle hits. G. Dep's "Special Delivery" gets the Diddy treatment with special guests Ghostface Killah and original Bad Boy Craig Mack. Sure, the two remix versions of "I Need a Girl," featuring Usher and Ginuwine, are excessive, but, hey, it's Sean Combs we're talking about here.

Life Force Radio    Icon
by Afu-Ra
This Rastafarian, rhyme-spitting martial arts expert fills the void left by Jeru the Damaja's near disappearance from the rap game with this follow-up to Body of the Life Force. Unlike a large chunk of today's crassly commercial emcees, Afu-Ra makes very few rhyme references to cars, cash, and Coogi sweaters. M.O.P. bring the pain on "Crossfire," while '80s stalwarts Big Daddy Kane and Teena Marie come along for the ride.

Fantastic Damage    Icon
by El-P
Eminem notwithstanding, El-P is one of the few Caucasian emcees that has made an appreciable popular impact. The beats on Fantastic Damage are grimy and gully (peep "Dr. Hellno and the Praying Mantis") and the lyrics are equally dark and disturbing (on "Stepfather Factory," El-P pens autobiographical sci-fi rhymes about abusive stepfathers). The Def Jux apocalypse is now.

Come Home with Me [EXPLICIT LYRICS]    Icon
by Cam'Ron
The Roc-a-Fella clique dominates hip-hop, so why not sign the rap game's most talented free agent? New label signee Cam'ron rips on his collaboration with Jay-Z ("Welcome to New York"), while "The Roc" features label mates Memphis Bleek and Beanie Sigel flipping gully rhymes over thumpin' beats by Kanye West, Just Blaze, and DR Period.

Upcoming Releases

Masquerade    Icon
by Wyclef Jean
Hands down the most ecleftic (get it?) member of the Fugees, Wyclef releases his third joint, which is more street, less R&B than his two previous solo offerings. On "The PJ's," he pays homage to all low-income housing dwellers, while the bootylicious Claudette from City High shows up for a wicked duet. This Refugee is now a permanent resident of hip-hop's cityscape. The CD doesn't drop until June 18, but you can pre-order your copy right now.

Nellyville    Icon
by Nelly
KRS-One is calling for a boycott of this LP because he thinks Nelly doesn't respect hip-hop elders. Maybe he's right, but that won't stop this St. Lunatic from blingin' and selling multiplatinum. "The Big Gank" is Nelly's sequel to chart blazer "Country Grammar," and there's an X-rated duet with Trina that's sure to titillate. Justin Timberlake is on the LP, too, but two out of three ain't bad. Nellyville isn't in stores until June 25, but you can snag a copy right now via pre-order from your friendly neighborhood Amazon.com.

The Infamous [EXPLICIT LYRICS]    Icon
by Mobb Deep
"Survival of the Fittest" and "Shook Ones" are two of the darkest reality-based audio headbangers recorded in the last decade by any rap artist, and they're both included here. Miraculously, The Infamous has absolutely no fast-forward material, expertly capturing the mental state of most struggling adolescents growing up in the projects. "I think the whole world's going insane/ I fill my mind up with liquor and drink away the pain." Profound.

To the East, Blackwards    Icon
by X-Clan
The X-Clan collective of emcees helped usher in the Afrocentric rap movement alongside Public Enemy and Poor Righteous Teachers. "Grand Verbalizer" and "Funkin' Lesson" play like they were recorded in 2002, and Brother J's pro-black-nationalist messages make KRS-One sound like he's waffling.

Artist Essentials

Tupac Shakur, De La Soul, Dr. Dre, Notorious B.I.G., and More
Tupac Shakur might have been hip-hop's greatest actor, not only in his films (Poetic Justice, Gridlock'd, Above the Rim, and Juice), but also in the way he delivered the soliloquies on his albums. Whether Tupac was a thug or just playing the part is irrelevant. His legacy rests on his albums: powerful, singular, and thought-provoking, just like their creator. Take a look at his essential recordings in our Essentials by Artist Store. Here are some other artists you'll find there:
